Today, we read aloud from
Maximum Ride, and we've finally reached the climax of the story. The kids are being chased, they've just set a bunch of other genetic experiments free, and all my kids are getting hostile when I tell them the bell is about to ring and it's time to stop reading. You would think I was trying to pry out their teeth without Novocaine or something. It's kind of cool.
Anyway, when the main character (Max) decides to let all of the other mutant experiments out of their cages, one of the experiments asks her, "Why are you doing this?" Max replies, "Because kids don't belong in cages."
To which a student in my 6th period class retorted, "Some do." And she looked pointedly at the boy who sits in the desk next to her.
